Novelist, Poet and Social Worker Mr. Hom Nath Subedi:
A Role Model for the Nepali Diaspora

Hom Nath Subedi is a Washington DC based Nepali novelist and poet who have devoted all his life to introduce and promote languages and literature of Nepal at the international level. In addition, he is a devoted social worker who has served for the Nepalese communities in the US and Nepal by working on numerous community organizations. He has served on many non-profit organizations in the North America such as America Nepal Society (ANS), Association of Nepalese in the Americas (ANA), Human Rights Committee-USA (HRC-USA), Nepalese Community Network of Canada (NCNC), Nepalis Americas Council (NAC), Sagarmatha Television, America Darpan and founded and served Dhaulagiri Jana Club, Annapurna Library and Chhantyal Seva Samitee in Nepal. While in Nepal, he published several short stories, poems, articles and research papers about Nepali language and literature in the magazines such as Himal, Madhu Parka, Jhankar, Deurali, Mahima, Dhawalagiri, Myagdi Pravah, Shree Surya and Ruprekha. He raised current social issues and made people aware through his writings. His main interest is to research and write to preserve the languages like Chhantyal, Magar, Gurung and their cultural heritage that are becoming extinct.

He came to the United States in 1981 to receive training in script writing and started to work for a company. Although he was working for a medical company, he did not stop writing and contributing to Nepali literature. He wrote and published many articles and books while making a living there. Some of his popular publications are:

Mr. Subedi is an important and valuable writer in many ways. His work stands as an example of what Nepalese critics and readers valued. His writings offer insight into an important phase in the development of Nepalese life. His writings described as a concept intended to unite powerful forces of life. His poetry dealt mostly with his life as a child in Nepal and in the US and the impact of living in the two worlds. His poems talks about the basic needs of mankind and speaks of hopes and dreams. He is able to explain about readers feel as if their own emotional voices are reflected
while reading his poems. As writer, poet and a literary person, Mr. Subedi has
always pleaded in his writing for a world with full of love and compassion.

In parallel to writing and serving the community, he founded International Nepali Literary Society (INLS), Washington DC in 1991 and started forming a network of people who are interested in languages and literature of Nepal. In his presidency, INLS became the first one to use internet to promote Nepali literature. He established Nepali Literature Home Page and edited first Nepali electronic newsletter called INSIGHT. The literary magazine is currently being published in the print media.
In addition to encouraging the community organizations in the US to promote Nepali literature by organizing poetry festivals and publishing Nepali literature section on their newsletters, he established relationships with literary organizations and individuals in the far corners of the world, including Japan, Australia, Canada, India and Britain with on-going attempt to introduce and promote Nepali language and literature in each corner. He was instrumental in establishing International Nepali Literary Best Book Awards through INLS to encourage and recognize contribution to Nepali literature internationally. In addition, he encouraged INLS to lunch Worldwide Nepali Language Education Program and establish School of Languages and Cultures of Nepal in Washington DC. Currently, he serves as chair of Board of Trustee and International Nepali Literature Award Committee, and Curriculum Committee of INLS.

He is still actively writing and contributing to Nepali literature. He is currently writing an epic called “Yo Samaj!” (This Society!) and it is being published in Nepalipost.com (http://www.nepalipost.com/epic.html) as by-weeekly serial free of cost. This could be the first time in Nepali history that a full Maha Kavya is published completely online and available for readers free of cost before it is being published in print media.

- Honored with an welcome ceremony by Dhawalagiri People’s Club, Sanatan Dharma Sewa Samiti, Annapurna Library, and Aama Samuja in Takam Myagdi.
- Honored with an appreciation plaque in 1997 by Association of Nepalese in the America convention in Boston.
- “Poet of the Merit Award Medal” and “Outstanding Achievement in Poetry Silver Award Cup by The International Society of Poets (ISP) on 17th day of August, 2003 during International Society of Poets Summer Convention and Symposium in Washington D.C.
- “Pioneer of Nepali Literature in the Nepali Diaspora” plaque and honor received for service to Nepali language and literature while living abroad and for founding International Nepali Literary Society and servicing its mission. Honor presented by Association of Nepalese in the Americas (ANA) and INLS Arizona chapter on July 2nd 2004.

- Research:
Balakrisna Sharma, as a researcher, published research work on “Study of Hom Nath Subedi’s life, personality and works,” Tribhuban University, Psychology and Social Science Central Division. In summary the work highlights Mr. Subedi as knowledgeable litterateur of past and contemporary ideals and values. He is a successful novelist and a thinker who has been able to paint a clear picture of realistic condition of people who are loyal to the nation. Mr. Subedi has been noted as a literary personality who will be never be forgotten for serving Nepali literature and cause both in Nepal and abroad.

Ratna Shree, Naulo Bihani, Garima magazines have published his interviews that are notable. Suskera a monthly publication of Suskera.com featured him on their July, 2002 issue (http://www.suskera.com/july2002/homnath.html). America Nepal Update, a monthly publication of Nepal USA Network featured him on its March, 2003 issue

Family: Born in Takam, lived in Kathmandu, and migrated to USA in 1981. Currently living with wife Nanda Devi Subedi. First son Puru Subedi, with his wife Kalpana Subedi, grandson Pukar, Sajar and granddaughter Kavita. Second son Prakash Subedi, with his wife Daya Subedi, grandsons Aakash, Aalok, and granddaughter Preeya. One daughter Kalpana Satyal with son in law Basu Satyal, grand son Bikalp, granddaughters Medha and Sapana. All live in Virginia, USA.
